Five Minute Friday: Quiet

This house knows the shuffle and slide of the breakfast routine.

It knows the alarming feeling of crumbs-meet-feet, and the would-you-please-put-your-plate-in-the-dishwasher-there-is-a-reason-I-emptied-that.

This house knows coming and going, straightening of hair, of clothes, of attitudes--most often mine.

This house knows the clank of the clothes washer, the running of water because you-found-the-pens again-didn't-you?, the too much momentum of doors closed by children who don't register  'gently'.

This house knows after school and here-all-day-with-mom-school, and pencil shavings, and too many stacks of paper, and books with stories that cause us to beg, just-one-more-chapter-PLEASE!

This house knows kisses, and bear hugs, and the rumpus of man cubs and sisters that always seem to find their energy right before bed.

This house knows the whisper of prayers and favorite songs that make night times feel safe.

This house knows big girls who linger too long, bounce back up to often, who increasingly stay up later than mom.

In the stolen hush of pre-dawn morning, this house knows the sorting of thoughts and the stringing of words...because before the sun rises is the only place that the quiet fits.

Okay, I lied about waiting until next week. I'm linking up again with the fabulous ladies at Gypsy Mama for the Five Minute Friday writing prompt.

Care to join us? Here is how the story goes:

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. And then absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community..
